HON.CAPT.BHUWANSINGRAI,SB,OBI,IOM

Born in a remote village of Kanku, East Nepal, Hon. Capt. Bhuwan Sing Rai was enlisted in the 1/10th Gurkha Rifles on 04.11.1912. During 1st World War his battalion was posted in the Western Frontier of India for his conspicuous gallantry during the war he was awarded I.O.M 2nd class and the “Jangi – Inam” of Rs.60/-P.A in 1934. He came to Shillong along with his battalion in 1935. He was awarded O.B.I, 2nd class with the title of “Bahadur”.In 1938 on being appointed as king’s Gurkha orderly officer during the coronation of king George the VIth. He proceeded to UK on which occasion he was awarded “Coronation Medal” and “OBI, 1st class” with the title “Sardar Bahadur” and in the same year his majesty the king graciously conferred on Him the“Royal Victorious Medal”(Silver) during 2nd World War.He was posted in the Burma front and for his bravery in the war, he was awarded “Burma Star Medal”and the“Jagir allowance” of Rs.600/-P.A.

He retired from service on 1.8.1943 and settle at Umlyngka, Upper Shillong and on 02.09.1946 he established Gorkha L.P School (Now Gorkha Higher Secondary School).

He was a great visionary and good social worker in recognition of which he was awarded a certificate of the Chief Civil Liaison Officer United Province & Eastern India on 14.12.1946.

He died on 12.11.1967 at his residence at Umlyngka, Upper Shillong, Meghalaya.“THE GREATER OUR KNOWLEDGE INCREASES, THE GREATER OUR  IGNORANCE  UNFOLDS”
